I took Grant for his six month checkup last Wednesday. He's doing well....he weighs 19 lbs, 7.5 oz (75th percentile), is 27 1/4 inches long (69%) and his head is in the 90th percentile! I didn't think his head looks as big as it apparently is!
Anyway, he did great with his shots....he had stopped crying by the time I took him to the room next door to nurse him, even before I started feeding him! And Dr. Thomas asked if he's rolling over yet....he rolled over a few times in early March, and hasn't done it since! But he's sitting up perfectly and grabbing things, so she said that he might be one of those babies who goes straight from sitting to pulling himself up, and may skip the crawling/rolling stage altogether.
Here's a picture after his shots with his little band-aids on!

First Trip to the Beach
We had a beautiful weekend here in Houston, so we decided to go to Galveston for the day on Saturday and take Grant to the beach! We had a great time....we went to the strand first, where we ate lunch and went to an amazing old-fashioned soda fountain for ice cream afterwards. This place, called LaKing (I believe) makes its own saltwater taffy and fudge, and they have boys wearing little white suits with hats and ties, ready to make your malts or shakes. I got an apple pie ice cream cone, and Dean got cheesecake ice cream (and Grant slept through the whole thing!).
Afterwards, we went to the beach, and Grant's favorite part was definitely the sand! We could hardly get him to look up for a picture; he just kept grabbing at it and feeling it! We did take him out to the water, but he was a little timid....he cried when we put his feet in, as you can see in the picture below. And after about an hour, he was getting tired (and very messy, as you can see in the last picture!), so we packed up and left. But since we only live about 25 minutes from Galveston, we said that we'll have to come back every month or so this summer....I think he'll just get more and more excited about (and interested in) the water every time we go.

That's not a hairDO.....
There's something they always used to do at Camp Ozark when Rob and I were campers; at the morning announcements, there were always little boys who obviously had just rolled out of bed and left their cabins without touching their hair. The person in charge would pick out a few of these boys and ask them to come to the front, and the entire group would yell, "that's not a hairDO, that's a hair DON'T!" That's exactly what I thought when Grant woke up the other morning! We bathed him the night before but weren't able to comb his hair well, since he fell straight to sleep while I was feeding him. The next morning, it was sticking straight up in the air! It was so funny....I got a kick out of it all day. Dean thought he looked like a Who from Who-ville, and I called him Baby Sanjaya because it looked like a mohawk from the side (see the last picture).

Mother's Day
I had a wonderful first Mother's Day....Grant's baby dedication at church was definitely the highlight! My parents came in town on Saturday and left Sunday shortly after church. Then Dean, Grant and I took a drive and explored some areas around Clear Lake and Seabrook that we've never seen. We ate dinner at a Mexican restaurant in Seabrook called Tequila Boom's....we were really impressed! Plus, we had a coupon (of course!), so that made it even better. We came home and took Grant outside while we watered the flowers. Here's a picture of Grant and me while we were outside, and another one of him lounging in his bath that night! He's definitely in the reaching and grabbing stage, because he squirms all over the place in his bathtub, trying to grab anything he can (and twisting himself around in the process)!

Grant's Dedication
We had Grant dedicated at church on Sunday. We had been told to go pick him up from the nursery as soon as the sermon was coming to a close, and to bring him down to the sanctuary at that time. With his stranger anxiety, I knew it probably wasn't a good idea to take him to the nursery at all, if he was going to have to be in front of a room full of people 5 minutes after picking him up! So my mom and I stayed out in the foyer with him during the service, and I gave him a bottle just before we had to go in. Because of that, he was in a great mood....he just made little noises the entire time, including during the prayer!
We dressed him in a little blue and white outfit that Dean thought was WAY too girly. He protested long and hard that morning....but my mom and I won out. We figured Grant would probably never be able to wear it again, since it's one of those dressy outfits that I'd never just dress him in for going out or to wear around the house. He looked like a little doll, but one man who Dean plays trumpet with in the orchestra kept referring to Grant as "she!" And the outfit was BLUE!! Oh well, he looked adorable anyway!
After we got home, we put Grant in a little christening gown that my grandpa wore over 80 years ago! Grant was getting tired and we had a hard time getting the sleeves on him....and he spit up about 10 seconds after we got it on! But it actually fit him pretty well, and he loved reaching for all the extra material once he was wearing it.
