Look what I can do!!

Cereal time (any meal time, actually) is taking much longer these days, now that Grant wants to grab the spoon every time I try to put it in his mouth! He's getting to be a big boy and wants to try to feed himself. He usually gets some of it in his mouth, and the rest ends up on his hands and his clothes. Although it's messy, I try to remember that it's good for him to try to figure it out by himself. He's also getting really good at picking up finger foods, which a few weeks ago he was still having a hard time doing. He loves shredded meats (turkey and ham) and he devoured part of an omelet I gave him the other night. The only foods that give him problems are ones that are slippery, like bananas and peaches. Most of those still end up on the floor or on his clothes!

Mommy's birthday

My birthday was on Saturday. We woke up that morning (the day after Grant's accident) and Grant was acting perfectly normal, which was such a relief. He was playing, babbling on and on, and acting happier than he's acted in probably a week (since he's had a virus and has been fussy in general). This was the greatest birthday present I could ever have wanted! We went to a nearby donut shop for breakfast, and Dean even took me to Exxon to get my gas station coffee/cappucino fix. Nothing like gourmet coffee for your birthday!!

Dean mowed our new lawn for the first time, then we all got dressed and went up into town for a few hours. We had lunch at Texadelphia and found a nice cabinet where we'll put all of our electronics stuff once our new big-screen TV arrives next week (more about that later).

We came home and watched football for the rest of the evening. Grant did get a little fussy and ended up going to bed at around 7:30pm. And unfortunately, the Tide couldn't pull off a win in overtime over Georgia. Oh well!!

Here's Grant checking out this other kid at Texadelphia. This little kid just stood there and talked to himself, on and on. I think Grant thought he was pretty peculiar, just like we did! Grant and Daddy in their Alabama gear:
Still loves the hat....and the glasses! He tries to grab them any chance he gets:

A worst nightmare realized

Most of you who are reading this know by now, but Grant had an accident on Friday morning. He's fine now (thank God!), but it was probably the most horrible 6 hours I've spent in my life. For all the details, read on (I'm writing it largely for myself, to have an account of what happened). If you don't want to read it all: Grant fell from the kitchen counter and has a small skull fracture. But he seems to be healing fine and it doesn't look like he has any serious injury from it.

At 10am, Grant had just had his morning snack of cereal, and I put him in his bumbo chair (on the kitchen island.....big mistake) while I cleaned up. Earlier that morning, he was sitting in the same place, and Dean and I mentioned that we probably need to stop putting him up there, because he's tall enough now that his legs touch the countertop and he can push himself. Well, of course you say those things but don't think that ONE more time is really going to hurt. I turned to grab a sippy cup out of the cabinet when I heard a "smack." I turned around and saw Grant and the bumbo on the floor. He started crying immediately, and I picked him up and called 911 (the first thing I thought to do). They asked if I wanted an ambulance, and I figured that was the best idea. That way, they could check him at the house before taking him to the hospital. And I didn't want to risk putting him in his carseat and taking him myself, where he might fall asleep on the way there.

The thing that worried me the most over those next few minutes (it took about 10 minutes for them to come) was that his cry didn't sound really normal....very low-pitched, almost a moaning sound. And he'd stop crying and just put his head against my chest, like he was just trying to go to sleep. I paced the floor, going inside and outside, and just prayed that he'd be okay.

When the ambulance finally arrived, we were outside. The men got out and just asked if I wanted Grant to be transported to the hospital. I asked if they needed to come in first, and they said there was probably nothing they could do.....he'd just have to be examined and possibly have head scans run. This was a little irritating.....I had waited 10 minutes just to have someone else show up to take us to the hospital?! I thought this was wasted time and that I should have just taken him myself.

Anyway, we got to the hospital and were checked in, then sent to a "minor care" room just as Dean arrived. There were other kids and babies in these rooms, so we thought "minor" here referred to children! Luckily, it meant that they didn't see Grant's case as requiring immediate attention. I wish I had known that at the time, because we waited for a while before even being seen by anybody. The whole time, I'm just worrying that his head is filling with blood or something, and nobody is coming to help us! But the physician's assistant finally did come, and his check of him was positive. He noticed some swelling on the side of his head but said that with massive head injuries, there are usually more obvious signs that Grant wasn't exhibiting. But still, he recommended a CT scan just to be sure.

We waited probably another hour before finally getting the CT scan done (at around 1:15). It was so scary seeing him swaddled up in all of those blankets (to mobilize him)....and he didn't like it one bit! But Dean said that during the CT scan, he stopped crying a few times to look at all the lights above him. Dean said he was fascinated by them! And the technician said that he did a great job....I was worried that he wouldn't be still enough to get accurate pictures, since any time he left my arms that morning he erupted in tears.

Anyway, after the CT scan, we waited another hour before hearing any definitive results. The PA came in at one point and said that he didn't see anything on the images that looked worrisome, but we would wait until the radiologist gave his report. A while later, the PA came back in and said that the radiologist did notice a small linear fracture on the right perineal part of his skull. There was no bleeding behind it, just some swelling on the outside. If an adult had this injury, they'd send them straight home and just tell them to watch for signs that bleeding might be occuring later. But he did give us the option to admit Grant, since he's an infant and can't tell us when he feels differently. But our doctor (who the PA called on the phone) was very positive, and said that he trusts us to watch out for signs at home over the weekend. He also said to tell me not to be very hard on myself, because this type of fracture is fairly common in children.

So we finally left the hospital at around 4pm, and just watched him closely over the weekend. We woke him up every two hours at night, but we never really noticed anything out of the ordinary. Then I took him to his pediatrician yesterday, and everything seems to be fine....she saw no signs of internal damage or bleeding. We are so thankful that God spared him from a more serious injury in all of this. Of course I blame myself because I did know better than to continue putting him in his bumbo on a raised surface (the bumbo even warns of this on the outside of it!). But it's one of those things that you just never think is going to happen to you. And everyone has been very encouraging and has shared their stories of stupid things they've done to allow their children to fall or be in accidents. In hearing these, I've learned how amazingly resilient our bodies are. And I'm so thankful that God watches out for our babies and gives us grace when we do stupid things!

We've moved!

We moved to our new house on Friday, so I'm just now getting my first chance to use the computer. It's been a hectic past week, but we're in our house and we love it! Dean's parents were here from Wednesday through Sunday to help, and we definitely couldn't have done it without them. There were a couple little bumps in the road....our electricity was cut off on Friday at 10am while we were at our new house for our final inspection. The TXU representative had told me that it would definitely be in the mid-afternoon, but apparently she was wrong! So our house was sweltering while we were moving. And our movers weren't able to fit everything onto their truck, so Dean and his dad (and our old neighbor Richard) made three or four extra trips bringing the rest of the furniture over here. They didn't finish until after 9pm....so it was a very long day! We also lost a bag containing some pillows and the quilt for our bed. And the movers could only fit two of our dining room chairs on their truck.....but one of those chairs is SO scuffed up! The guy even admitted that they ran out of blankets to cover them!! It's very noticable, so we're thinking they're just going to have to replace the chair. They'd better!!! So it was a little bit frustrating with all that happened, but my mom said that everybody always has moving stories. So I guess things rarely go perfectly!

Grant also came down with some kind of nasty virus....he started acting fussy and had a little fever on Saturday. We assumed it was teething, but Sunday night he felt especially hot. His temp on Monday morning was 102.5, so I took him to the doctor. His doctor has seen a virus going around that starts off without many symptoms (at least that are noticable in a baby). But it progresses into a cold after a few days. So we'll have to see if he's right! Anyway, Grant has just been upset and very fussy these past couple of days (and nights), which has taken its toll on me too. Last night he slept horribly (couldn't even get comfortable in my arms while I rocked him) and he woke up this morning with a fever of 103.7! The nurse said this was hopefully the peak of it.

Okay, this is much longer than I intended! I will try to upload a picture or two of our house in the next few days. And apparently I need to add back the ability to make comments. I got one wierd comment from someone speaking Portuguese one time, so it freaked me out and I removed all comments! But I may try it again. Hope to talk to all of you soon.....

Shoes

We received a few hand-me-down pairs of Robeez slip-on shoes from our friends Barbara and Stephen, and I put a pair on Grant a few days ago. He looks like such a big boy with them on! At first, he wasn't sure what to make of them and tried to pull them off a few times, but he got used to them quickly. He didn't seem to even notice them after a few minutes...and they're nice because they're so thin, so it's basically like wearing socks. Grant's not walking yet, but he is starting to take steps around pieces of furniture, and he'll "surf" from one thing to another (he's just starting to do that). So while he doesn't really need shoes now, I figured I'd better start getting his feet used to them.

Sleepy boy!!

This was so funny.....one day last week, Grant was being difficult at naptime and I was tired of struggling with getting him to go to sleep, so I decided just to get him out of his crib and wait a little while before trying to put him down again. We went to the kitchen and made my lunch, and I sat down at the table to eat. I went ahead and put Grant in his highchair and gave him some snacks to eat too. Well, before long I could tell he was getting VERY tired. He kept eating but his eyes were getting more and more droopy with every bite. He'd even shut them for a few seconds at a time, then open them back up again and keep eating. Finally, he'd had enough....he just laid his head down and fell asleep! It was the cutest thing, although I felt a bit like a negligent mom letting my baby get so tired that he'd fall asleep in his highchair! Oh well....

Playing with Jacob

Grant and I went to the library last week with our friends Sierra and Jacob. Jacob is 4 months old and had never been to Book Babies before. We had a good time, but both the boys were still fairly clueless about what's going on! It's designed for newborns to age 18 months, but the babies who are truly participating are usually over a year old. I've been going with Grant for the past few months (sometimes we go twice a week, sometimes not at all), and he still just enjoys watching what's going on. I'm sure eventually he'll catch on and be able to clap and do the hand motions.

Anyway, after the library, Sierra and Jacob came over to our house for a while. Jacob had already gotten back into his carseat when Grant became very interested in him! I think he thought Jacob was a toy, because he kept pulling at his hair and his face! Jacob was a good sport, though....he never cried or fussed even though it looked very painful a couple of times!

Jacob....what a cutie!!
Grant is having fun, and Jacob is wondering what's happening to him!!

Both boys smiling....

Labor Day

We had a nice Labor Day....we started it off by saying good-bye to the Mustang! Robbie, his wife Ashly, and his dad came down in the morning to pick it up. Here's a picture of all the guys standing in front of it.
Dean and Grant crying as it drives away one last time! Just kidding...
That afternoon, we had a fun Labor Day party with our Sunday school class. There was a big group of us, and we finally figured out (after many tries) how to work the timer on our camera! There were so many kids there....there were 8 babies ages 16 months and younger, plus a few more who are older!

Finally....another picture of the three of us together! I don't think we've had one taken since Easter! It was so cute that I decided to use it as our photo on the front of our blog. Grant had a good time crawling around and playing with Benjamin's toys (we had the party at his parents' house), but he was very tired and ready for bed by the time we left!

Fun in the bath!

Yesterday we gave Grant his first "big boy" bath at home, where he just sat by himself in the tub instead of in his little blue infant tub. We should have done this a LONG time ago, as he has been standing and squirming around in that little tub for weeks now! But I never remembered to look for a large child-sized shower mat while I was out, until I finally found one last week at Target. So he enjoyed playing yesterday, but there were a couple of times that he planted his head in the water while diving for toys. So now we have to watch him even more closely (at least until he figures out what happens when his face falls in the water!). This next picture is about a week old, but shows what he does when it's bathtime. When he hears the water running, I go into his bedroom and take his clothes and diaper off, then set him on the floor. He takes off crawling into the bathroom and stands next to Daddy, just bouncing up and down and making noise until we put him in the water!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, EVAN!

We hope you have a great birthday, big boy! We had fun with you this weekend and can't wait to see you again in a couple of months for Grant's birthday! We love you!

Packing is fun!

Grant has been "helping" me pack a lot this past week. He loves to play with tape, and he's discovered that it's really fun to pull it off boxes that I've just packed!
Here he is going through some of the kitchen gadgets I'd just finished putting into a box....
As I may have said before, Grant LOVES to crawl over to the cat food and water bowls. Sometimes in a span of 10 minutes I'll have to go grab him 20 times! That kid has a one-track mind sometimes! The other day, I set up a barricade of boxes so that he couldn't get through to get to that part of the room. But he even figured out a way to get through the barricade....he found a small opening and squirmed his way through it!

Although it's taking me much longer than it would take an ordinary person (without a baby) to pack up our house, I'm very thankful for the company he provides to me! And I'm just more and more amazed every day at things he figures out, and how he's becoming like a curious little person more and more!

Evan's First Birthday!

Our nephew Evan, who lives in Austin, had his first birthday party this weekend. We all had so much fun celebrating with him, and he was a great birthday boy! Dean, Grant and I got there on Friday night and the boys got to play for a few minutes together before going to bed. Here's a cute picture of Evan.....isn't this face adorable??

The next morning, the boys played together a little bit. Well, really, they mainly just played near one another and looked at each other a few times!
When it was time for morning snack, they both sat on the floor and ate next to one another. Here's a picture of Evan protecting his territory.....I think Grant is trying to steal his Cheerios!
Grant is admiring his cousin....
Here he goes again.....what a little scavenger!!
Leah is so cute and creative....Cheerios, cheese, grapes and apple juice for the babies at the party!
Evan with Grandma. Isn't his little birthday outfit cute?
Evan and Grant playing again before the party started. Grant wants those toys!
My brother Rob, sister-in-law Leah, and Evan.
Evan's not quite sure what to make of his cake!! He ended up getting it all over his hands and kept trying to clap them together to get it off!

Time for table food (this time for real!)

We tried giving Grant some real table foods again beginning last weekend, and this time he has picked it up pretty well! About a month ago, I tried giving him a few pieces of banana, and he gagged every time I put one in his mouth (see previous post). But I made our favorite dessert, Eclair Cake (Paula Deen recipe) last weekend, and decided to give him a few bites. He LOVED it and couldn't get enough of it....of course! Who doesn't like Paula Deen desserts?! I started to wonder if that was such a good decision.....it was the only "table food" we gave him for those first couple of days, and I wondered if he would grow such an attachment to the Eclair Cake that he'd think we're crazy for giving him anything any less tasty!

But he's been doing well ever since....he now likes bananas, and has also eaten peaches, peas, kiwi, turkey, Cheerios, and some other things that don't come to mind right now. Of course I am so worried that he's going to choke on everything (he only has two teeth!), so I mash all of his food up with my fingers before putting it into his mouth! I'm sure I'll eventually get better at that....hopefully before he goes to Kindergarten!

Gerber also sells something called "biter biscuits" which look an awful lot like dog biscuits! But Grant likes them a lot.....the first time I gave him one, he grabbed it and held it with two hands while eating from it. I guess that's the idea. They're nice and sweet and I think it makes him feel proud that he's feeding himself! But again, I have to be very careful because all of a sudden I'll notice that he's bitten off a huge chunk into his mouth!

Here's a picture of him enjoying a taste of Eclair Cake (probably the 3rd time he had it!)
Eating a biter biscuit....
"I like bananas, but I'd really like to eat this part of them too!"
