This should have been his Dan Quayle moment, but it won't be.

As a political and talk radio junkie, I've been following all of this health care stuff closely over the past few days. It just makes me fume to watch all of those Democratic leaders basically ramming this bill down our throats, with no regard as to what the American people want (and demonstrated when they elected a Republican senator to take Ted Kennedy's place in Massachusetts). It is beyond description, how far they're willing to go to get it passed. Completely disgraceful.

Anyway, I could go on and on. A couple of days ago, Obama was in Ohio and I'm sure many people saw his quote regarding health care premiums. He said that this bill would reduce by an estimated 3,000 percent the health care premiums that companies pay for their employees. Then he said, "so, that means you could get a raise." Of course the crowd went wild. I heard this on the radio and thought, this doesn't make any sense. You can increase something by 3000%, but you can't decrease something by 3000%. You can only decrease something by 100% before it gets to zero!

And then yesterday, Rush Limbaugh even gave an example on his radio show. Say company XYZ pays $4,000 per employee for health care premiums each year. A 3000 percent decrease in their health care premiums would mean that the insurance company would then be paying company XYZ $120,000 per employee per year. It makes no sense at all. In fact, if George Bush had made a mistake like this in a speech, it's all you would have heard about on the talk shows and news reports for a week. But since it was Obama, nobody even seems to notice or fact check his numbers (except on conservative talk radio). Not that this is surprising, but it's still infuriating. He just continues to mislead people, and apparently he's not ever going to be called on it!

An interesting thing to see.....

Drew's sleep has been driving me crazy the past couple of weeks. He's been waking up at random hours throughout the night, then every five minutes afterward for as long as I will put up with it. For example, he might wake up at 1am (crying for his blanky....he settles down as soon as I give it to him), then I'm barely back asleep when I hear him crying again. And then a few minutes later he does it again. He's learned to throw his blanky on the floor, because he assumes I'll come back in to give it to him every time.

Now I'm not really putting up with it anymore.....I'll give him his blanky once, but the next time I might let him cry for 20 minutes before giving it to him again. It seems to be working a little. And in the mornings (he first wakes up at 5:50 or 6am, which just seems way too early), I'll give him his blanky once, then I'll have to just let him cry if I haven't showered by the next time he wakes up.

So this morning, I heard him crying as I got out of the shower. In about ten minutes I was ready to go downstairs (Grant had woken up and come into our room by that point), and Grant and I went to get Drew. We walked into Drew's room, but Drew wasn't in his crib. He was sitting on the floor, a few feet away from his crib. What the heck??!! It was so bizarre. If he fell out just before I came in, I would've heard some kind of thud, right? If he fell out while I was in the shower, wouldn't he have found his way to the door and come out? Granted, it was still very dark outside (6:40am, which is still dark after the time change), but surely his eyes would have adjusted enough to find his way to the door?

Anyway, it's still quite a mystery to me. I've never seen him come anywhere close to climbing out of his crib, and he's only 17 months old. He's definitely not ready for a toddler bed.....so hopefully this won't happen again. It made me feel a little guilty for letting him cry, though, knowing he was laying on the floor in his room while I was taking my time getting ready. Oops....just another one of those "bad mommy" moments, I guess!

Teaching Mommy

It's funny to have conversations with Grant now; instead of just hearing him make basic sentences (which is all we've known until now), he is learning now how to correct you when he notices that you're describing something incorrectly. Today after we got home from school, I laid my keys on the front table. After about ten minutes, Grant handed them to me and told me, "you don't need to put these keys here. That's not where they go." And I said, "oh, thank you, I'll put them right here in my bag." He replied, "no, your purse."

He does this a lot....he was sitting on top of his jacket when he got in his carseat a few days ago, and I said, "here, let me get your shirt out from under you." He replied, "no, my jacket."

"Blanky" was the name of Drew's original green lovey, which we lost at Wal-Mart about a month ago. Thankfully we had already found a replacement (exactly the same, but brown, so Dean named it "Brownie." We are original, I know!). Sometimes I'll still refer to Drew's blanky as "blanky," and Grant often will correct me, saying, "that's not Blanky, it's Brownie. We lost Blanky at Wal-Mart."

Anyway, he does stuff like this a lot.....he likes to tell me when I've gotten something wrong!

Lately he's also been insisting on putting his shoes and socks on by himself. Last week on Super Why the message of the day was "Do it yourself." A few minutes after it ended, he was trying to put his sock on. I stepped in and tried to help when I noticed he had it upside down. He said, "no, Super Why said to do it yourself. So I'm going to do it myself. I just need to keep trying."

And today after lunch Drew walked over to the table near where my plate was sitting. Grant told him, "no Drew, you cannot knock over Mommy's plate, because it's made of glass." Then he proceeded to pick up a bookmark on the table, and he told me, "this can fall on the floor because it's made out of plastic." He dropped it on the floor and said, "see, it didn't break!"

Funny little guy!

Things I'm thankful for today

1. Even though Grant goes to school on Monday and Wednesday, his teachers invited all the MW kids to come to school today for their special pajama day. They set up a tent in the classroom and had s'mores for their snack, as if they were on a camping trip. They also invited the MW kids to come a couple of weeks ago on a Thursday for the class Valentine's party. I'm so grateful to the teachers because I know that it's hard work for them to have those extra kids in the classroom those days (and we're obviously not paying for them!).

2. While Grant was at school, Drew came with me to Marshall's to return a shirt. He woke up at 5:30am and never went back to sleep in bed with me, so he was tired. I realized as I was getting my refund that he had fallen asleep in my arms. Yay!! Time to shop! I had planned on leaving, but instead I was able to browse for about 30 minutes while Drew slept in my arms. It is such a special treat to be able to spend time shopping these days; I am always so hurried and distracted when I have the boys with me. And our Marshall's is so fun now; I think it's gotten leaps and bounds better in the past couple of years, and now I'm becoming addicted to the place!

3. Warm weather! Finally! Until about a week ago, I was enjoying the cold temperatures, knowing that summer is only a few months away. But all of a sudden, I'm sick of it. I'm so tired of being freezing cold in our house, where I can't stay warm without wearing a blanket around my shoulders! So this 60+ degree weather feels heavenly.....and hopefully the 70s will come soon. I know I will be regretting saying this in a few months.....but it's been a long, cold winter (for Texas) and it makes me glad I don't live in a climate where a winter like this would be considered mild!

4. Dean had a dinner for work last night, so the boys and I were on our own all day, and Dean didn't get home until past bedtime. I get so short-tempered with the boys when I have to go all day by myself (I'm not sure how I'm going to make it when he has turnaround for two weeks in April). But today he's (hopefully) coming home at a normal time, and he's off tomorrow. Yay!

5. Healthy kids- I receive CaringBridge updates for two little girls fighting cancer. Reading their stories and their parents' feelings of fear and uncertainty (such a roller coaster of emotions), I can't imagine going through something like that with my child. I look at my boys and am so thankful that God has given me healthy kids, and that my struggles are so much more mundane. It helps to keep my frustrations in perspective, and it's a good reminder not to take their health for granted.

Kitchen- before and after

I'm still not 100% happy with the way our kitchen has turned out (I could go on forever), but here are some before and after pics:

Kitchen at move-in:

Now:We changed out the appliances two years ago, shortly after moving in (we chose black to match our refrigerator, and I actually think black looks better than stainless in our kitchen...even though stainless is all the rage right now!).

Last spring, we got a big tax refund and decided to use the money towards new countertops and backsplash. I'm not a big fan of the light wood cabinets, but we didn't want to spend money on refacing (or buying new ones). We decided on the black galaxy countertops (black with some copper flecks)....and I love it (except that water stains show up easily!). Then it came time to figure out a backsplash. At first I wanted to go bold, and I wanted to cover it entirely in glass mosaic (I asked opinions on our blog). But my friend Erin put a photoshop picture together of what it might look like, and I was surprised how "busy" it looked. I also liked the idea of using 3X6 travertine (natural stone) laid out like bricks. So with the help from a lady at Daltile, I decided to do the subway tile travertine, with a strip of glass mosaic just along the middle.

So we had the backsplash installed four months ago, and I've been frustrated ever since! When I saw it completed, I didn't like it. The travertine wasn't as dark as I expected, making the glass stand out too much. But when the travertine was wiped with a wet washcloth, it instantly became darker. The installer agreed, and told me that DE Flooring (where we purchased the countertops/backsplash) could seal it, to give it that "wet" look. So I called our salesman Ricardo and told him I wanted the tiles to look darker, and he told me that it's very expensive for them to seal it, but that I should just go to Lowe's and pick up some sealer and do it ourselves.

So this is what I did (not realizing that there are a million different sealers out there).....and we put five coats of sealer on the backsplash, just like the instructions said. I noticed that it wasn't instantly getting darker, but I thought that would happen as you apply more coats. But after it was done, it was obvious that it didn't make it much darker (maybe a tiny bit).

A couple of months ago I was just frustrated and went back to DE Flooring to see if there was anything else that could be done. When I showed pictures to Ricardo, his response was, "you should have used an enhancer to make the tiles darker." Sure enough, they carry this "enhancer" product that's designed specifically to make natural stone have that "wet" look. Why in the world didn't he tell me this to begin with?!

I could go on and on about that place, but I will stop. We learned about a product that can strip the current sealer off, and I got a small sample. It doesn't seem to be working, but we haven't tried it exactly as the instructions say. Hopefully we'll do that this week. If it doesn't work, Dean is going to try to make an appointment to speak with Ricardo and Abdul (the owner of the place) to see about having them do it for us. This is a (supposedly) reputable place in our area, but we've had nothing but trouble with them.

I took these pictures at night, and the travertine does look darker at night. It mainly looks bad in the daytime, and especially when the sun is shining directly on it. I know that our kitchen looks leaps and bounds better than when we started, but it's just frustrating to spend the money and not get the exact result you want (especially when I was given wrong information and all of this could have been easily avoided!).
